Boat Tours & Cruises
Choose this category when the main purpose is sightseeing, narration, sailing or a scenic cruise. Kayaking, paddleboarding, surfing, fishing and rentals belong in our separate Water Activities & Boating guide.
- Classic schooner sails: Newport Classic Cruises operates traditional sailing and motor-yacht trips from the downtown wharves, with daytime, specialty and sunset options. View Newport Classic Cruises.
- Small-group sailing: Sightsailing of Newport offers morning, afternoon and sunset sails plus private charters from Bowen’s Wharf. View Sightsailing.
- Narrated harbor cruises: Best for visitors who want Newport and Jamestown history, landmark identification and a comfortable seated experience.
- Private charters: A strong choice for proposals, family gatherings, wedding weekends and customized sunset outings.
- Save The Bay seal tours: Seasonal wildlife cruises offer opportunities to see harbor seals; longer options may combine seal viewing with Rose Island Lighthouse. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Check Save The Bay tours.
Tip: Bring a light layer. Temperatures on Narragansett Bay can feel much cooler than downtown Newport.
Helicopter Tours
Newport Helicopter Tours departs from Newport State Airport in Middletown. Routes can include Newport Harbor, the Pell Bridge, Ocean Drive, coastal lighthouses and the Gilded Age mansions. Short flights work well for limited schedules; longer and custom options cover more coastline. View official flight options.
Know before you fly: Weather, passenger weight limits, seating arrangements, minimum ages and cancellation policies matter. Doors-off flights have additional restrictions.
Skydiving
Skydive Newport operates tandem skydiving experiences from Newport State Airport in Middletown, a short drive from downtown Newport. First-time jumpers are attached to a certified tandem instructor and can see the Newport coastline, Narragansett Bay and Aquidneck Island during the flight and parachute descent. View Skydive Newport.
Participants must be at least 18 years old, and height, weight, health and mobility requirements apply. Skydiving is highly weather-dependent, so leave flexibility in the day and call the operator when conditions are uncertain. Review the physical requirements, instructor credentials, United States Parachute Association membership, cancellation policy and optional photo or video packages before reserving.
Mansion Tours
- The Breakers: The best first mansion for most visitors and Newport’s grandest Vanderbilt-era introduction.
- Marble House: Known for opulent interiors and its oceanfront Chinese Tea House.
- The Elms: Strong for architecture, gardens and service-history experiences.
- Rosecliff: Best for ballroom glamour, film history and exhibitions.
- Beneath The Breakers: A specialty experience focused on the underground systems and technology that operated the estate; availability is limited.
- Additional choices: Rough Point, Belcourt, Hunter House and seasonal specialty programs add different architectural and ownership stories.
Open properties, timed tickets and specialty tours vary throughout the year. Check Newport Mansions schedules.
Sightseeing Tours
Fort Adams tours and tunnels
Guided Fort Adams experiences explain the enormous coastal fortification and may include underground listening tunnels or areas not obvious on a self-guided visit. Tour availability can change around major events, festivals and weather.
Ocean Drive and city-overview tours
A narrated drive helps connect downtown, Bellevue Avenue, the mansions, Castle Hill, Brenton Point, Fort Adams and the harbor. This is a practical first-day option and works especially well for travelers with limited mobility or limited time.
Private driving and photography tours
Private tours can add flexible stops, hotel pickup and a pace tailored to families, couples or photography interests. Confirm exactly what admission, parking and gratuities are included.
Trolley, Walking & Ghost Tours
Viking Trolleys
Viking Tours has operated narrated Newport sightseeing tours since 1962. Public trolley routes typically introduce visitors to the Gilded Age, Bellevue Avenue and Newport’s scenic areas, with private and group options also available. View Viking Trolley tours.
Historical walking tours
The Newport Historical Society leads themed walks through colonial streets and architectural districts, including stories that connect Newport’s early seaport history with its later Gilded Age transformation. View historical walking tours.
Lantern-lit ghost walks
Ghost Tours of Newport offers evening walking experiences built around historic streets, local legends and supernatural storytelling. Treat these as atmospheric entertainment with historical context, and check walking distance and age recommendations before bringing children. View Ghost Tours of Newport.
Dinner Train: Grand Bellevue Rail Dining Experience
The Grand Bellevue Rail Dining Experience departs from Portsmouth, north of Newport. Restored 1940s dining cars travel along historic Aquidneck Island rails while guests enjoy Narragansett Bay and Mount Hope Bridge views.
- Grand Dining: A leisurely multi-course dinner experience suited to dates and celebrations.
- Mystery on the Bellevue Express: An interactive murder-mystery dinner performed aboard a theater dining car.
